Christmas Presents Review

I wanted to let you know about a couple of presents I received this year for Christmas. Both are highly recommended by the Low-Tech Times.

First, I received a great book from my father-in-law. It is entitled Country Wisdom and Know-How and it is packed with tons of useful information, including how to make home remedies, how to grow a vineyard, how to field dress game, how to cook, and much, much more.

Secondly, some close friends gave us a hand-crank radio. Hand-crank radios are very good to have around during power outages. In addition to regular AM/FM radio, the radio also picks up television stations and NOAA weather channels. It plays for quite awhile on the rechargeable battery and you can recharge the battery by cranking if necessary during extended power outages.

I got one of those crank radios from LLBean. Gotta say the hand crank option is poor. It runs down over time. I bought a couple of hand crank flashlights too and they had similar issues. Pretty much have to crank continously for light or sound.

Interesting… I’ll update the site after I have a chance to use mine more. Thanks, Jon.

We used the hand crank radio for awhile during Earth Hour. I thought it performed reasonably well, playing a very far away AM station for a good 10-15 minutes off a couple minutes worth of cranking.

[…] While we do not live in one of the major cities participating in the event, my wife and I decided it would be fun to spend an evening without electric lights. We lit some candles, built a fire, poured some Virginia wine, and played fiddle and guitar tunes. After the jam session, we listened to the Grand Ole Opry on my hand crank radio. […]
