Facebook Accounts Are Completely Unnecessary

I wrote a blog post last week about the Apple ad that claims an iPhone is terrific to have at a ski resort.  That post generated some interesting reader comments.  I saw a different ad the other day from Apple saying that if you love Facebook and check it every time you’re on your computer, then you’ll really love checking Facebook on an iPhone.

My reaction:  I don’t love Facebook.  I have never used Facebook so this was another iPhone ad that did not result in a positive response from me.  I have received a few Facebook Friend requests in my email, but I do not understand the benefit of accepting the requests.  What the heck is a Facebook Wall Post and why would I need one?

I was talking with my mom recently and she mentioned that she also received a couple of Facebook Friend requests and, like me, she did not respond to them.  She said that she already has enough friends.  What exactly does Facebook do to help friends communicate that you cannot already do with email and phone calls?

The BBC published an interesting article saying that Facebook memberships are down in the U.K. so apparently we’re not the only ones who do not see the value of Facebook.  Will Facebook’s downward U.K. trend extend to the U.S.?

You have some very interesting references in your post, but I find myself disagreeing with your view about Facebook accounts. I saw that you commented on the Robert Scolbeizer’s post about someone’s Facebook account getting canceled. I actually responded to that post on my own blog: you can view that post at the following location.

Normally I would not post links back to my own blog when pining is disabled, however I thought it was interesting that we have such opposing views about Facebook.

Look forward to hearing from you,

    Tim

Thanks for the comment, Tim Sally. I left you a post on your blog. I acknowledge that Facebook may be a tool that could help sharing across groups of people. However, the tool also can be time consuming and I’m not sure Facebook is the best tool out there for networking.

I love how my BlackBerry came with a link to download Facebook software. I can’t even get rid of the link/icon, I can just hide it. Why would I want to find them on Facebook through my phone when I could just CALL THEM?

Heather, I agree that is ridiculous and annoying. I bet the two companies made some sort of deal resulting in that annoying Facebook icon.
