Big Brown Wins Kentucky Derby
In an age of hi-tech/hi-speed NASCAR and IndyCar racing, thoroughbred horse racing remains popular. This past weekend, my wife and I watched Big Brown win the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby on free tv. The classic event began in 1875.
The race was certainly exciting, but also sad in that Eight Belles, the runner-up horse, had to be put down after breaking both front ankles.
The Telegraph.co.uk site offers a bit more information:
Overcoming his outside No 20 draw, Big Brown cruised into the lead on the home turn in the hands of Kent Desormeaux and forged clear to win by 4¾ lengths.
It was the jockey’s third Kentucky Derby victory and a first for trainer Rick Dutrow Jnr.
However, within minutes of the race ending, runner-up Eight Belles was put down on the track after breaking both her front ankles in the final yards of the race.
