Kevin left a recent comment asking about my position on education.
You might be surprised to learn that I support teaching computer skills in school. Hi-tech office jobs will continue to be a piece of the economy, but they are not the only piece. I think computer education should be balanced with exposure to other fields and trades. For example, I suggest teaching farming courses in school. It can be difficult for a 17-18 year old to decide what career they want to go into (at least it was for me), so I suggest exposing students to as many career opportunities as possible during school.
Today, high schools seem to judge themselves based on how many students they can ship off to college. Certainly, I enjoyed my college years and have benefited from the experience in some ways. However, there are alternatives to degrees, office jobs, and the rat race… and smart kids deserve to at least know about them.
