Internet Addiction Growing
Despite the positive influence of The Low Tech Times, the Internet addiction problem appears to be growing. The Low Tech Times previously reported that Internet addiction may be a mental disorder. Now, according to Medill Reports, 5-10% of people in the U.S. may be afflicted with an Internet addiction and that percentage may actually be higher in other countries of the world.
The Medill Reports article, written by Manuel Baigorri, also describes treatments for Internet addiction:
“There are no real drugs for this yet,” she said. “It’s not about medication, it’s more about therapy.”
The estimated recovery time varies.
At the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery, some patients need 30 to 90 days in-patient treatment, followed by a continuing care program.
But Internet addiction recovery, as any other addiction, requires lifelong treatment, experts said.
“This [problem] can reactive itself any time if the person does not keep working on the recovery,” said Moore. “We see recovery as a lifelong endeavor.”
Obviously, many Internet users are not suffering with a problem addiction. However, it is very easy for anyone, myself included, to waste valuable time on the Internet. As you look at your computer screen, take a moment to think about the best use of your time. Take another moment to look beyond the monitor and reflect on the real world.
