Christopher Columbus departed Spain on August 3, 1492 with three ships, the Pinta, the Nina, and the Santa Maria. His goal was to find a new route to China and India by sea. The low-tech ships were powered by sail and crews navigated according to the stars above. At 2:00 AM on October 12, 1492, a crew member spotted land from the Pinta. The voyage led to the European colonization of the American continents.
