Learn to Park Your Own Car

Matthew Dolan of the Wall Street Journal writes about Ford’s new self-parking system:

DETROIT — Ford Motor Co. plans to offer two Lincoln models next year that can park themselves, the latest move in a strategy aimed at improving the public’s image of the auto maker.

The automatic parallel-parking system will be shown next month at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and will be offered as an option on the Lincoln MKS sedan and MKT crossover-utility vehicle. (See a video of the system in action on YouTube.)

The driver still needs to operate the transmission and apply the gas and brake, but does not need to turn the steering wheel at all.

Drivers should learn how to park their own cars rather than rely on a hi-tech computer system with sensors to park.  Most people will rather not pay for this expensive and unnecessary self-park option.
