Cellphoning and Driving Don’t Mix

The Low-Tech Times has previously reported on states banning texting and hand-held cellphone use while driving.  Now, according to Ron Dzwonkowski’s article in Freep.com, the National Safety Council wants a total ban on driving while cell-phoning:

Now the National Safety Council is calling on all states to enact a total ban on cell phone use while driving, whether or not the phone is hands-free, and calling on all employers to prohibit workers from using cell phones while driving on the job. The NSC says that based on a review of over 50 studies, drivers talking on the phone are four times more likely than other drivers to be in a crash. One Harvard analysis pegs the toll from phone use while driving at 2,600 deaths and 12,000 serious injuries each year.

When our friends have been drinking, we take the car keys away,” said Janet Froetscher, the group’s president and chief executive. “It’s time to take the cell phone away.”
