President-elect Barack Obama and VP-elect Joe Biden were not the only ones traveling to Washington DC by rail this weekend.
Markus Garner wrote an article for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about citizens riding the Amtrak Crescent to Washington D.C. for the presidential inauguration:
“I thought it was neat that Barack Obama was riding the train” to Washington, said Betsy Ayers of Carrollton. “I thought, ‘Hey, let’s do it too.”
Although Ayers’ husband initially bought airline tickets, a booking snafu landed the family of three on the train — just as she had hoped.
“When you get on the plane, we’re all crammed in,” Ayers said. “On the train, you get to know a lot of people.”
Zach Brendel, of Athens, bought tickets for girlfriend Sarah Drew as a Christmas present.
“I just like the romance of the train,” he kidded with Drew.
