Fawn Johnson of The Wall Street Journal reports:
The bill also includes $6 billion to promote deployment of high-speed Internet access in unserved and underserved areas, considerably less than the $44 billion requested by Internet advocates…
The Internet funding portion of the stimulus bill is considered a down payment on efforts Obama will make to blanket the country with high-speed connections, according to an Obama transition team official.
I was listening to Kim Komando on WTOP radio last Thursday and I tend to agree with her that perhaps the government should not be funding higher speed Internet access. While not available in some areas of the country, I find a typical DSL connection to be adequate. I do not see how the ability to download stupid videos faster in higher resolution will stimulate the economy.
