Low Tech Traction: Cable Chains

Cable Chains

About a month ago, I could not make it up a road during a night snow storm.  Since then, I ordered SCC radial chains.  After a significant snow storm last night, I got a chance to try them out.

I was able to install them on the drive wheels of my front wheel drive car in a matter of minutes.  I drove down our snow covered driveway and was able to climb back up.  I did experience some wheel slippage on my way back up, but there is no way I would have made it up without the chains.

These cable chains will not turn your vehicle into an unstoppable tank, but they will greatly improve winter traction in snow.  I plan to use them to help me get in and out of the neighborhood and remove them once I make it to the main roads, which are typically cleared and passable.

If you are looking to improve winter traction without purchasing an all-wheel drive vehicle, these inexpensive SCC radial chains are an excellent investment.  Highly recommended.

The SCC radial chains are available from Amazon.com, but first be sure to find the correct sizing information from SCC.
