To gain some interesting perspective, I subscribe to web entrepreneur Jason Calacanis’s free email list. You can sign up here if interested: http://www.tinyurl.com/jasonslist.
In a message earlier this year, Calacanis described the problems caused by the ability for people to post anonymously on the Internet. Many people write things that they would never say to someone’s face. Here’s an excerpt from Jason’s article:
Digital communications is a wonderful thing–at least at the start. Everyone participating in digital communities is eventually introduced to Godwin’s Law: At some point, a participant, or more typically his or her thinking, will be compared to the Nazis. But that’s only part of the breakdown. Eventually, you see the effect of what I’ll call Harris’ Law: At some point, all humanity in an online community is lost, and the goal becomes to inflict as much psychological suffering as possible on another person.
The phenomenon has led Jason to retire from blogging and has led at least one other hi-tech blogger to take a month off.
I suppose not having a large readership in some ways is a blessing since articles on this site typically contain no comments or just a few nice ones. Thank you very much for your civil discourse.
