Is Blogging Addictive?

As mentioned yesterday, the inhumanity of anonymous Internet communication led to Jason Calacanis to retire from blogging.  I think it’s fair to point out that since Calacanis’s announcement, he has not completely retired from blogging but he has turned off comments and mostly uses his blog as a photo blog or to occasionally promote his human powered search engine company (Mahalo.com).  I think it can be difficult to completely stop blogging.

A Personal Confession

Despite recently writing that I would cut back on blogging to work this year on writing a novel, I have still been blogging most days.  While it only takes a few minutes to create a blog post, I think Bob Bly makes a good point that even more time is wasted away from the computer by thinking about blogging.

Even if you don’t blog, you can still waste a lot of time online checking email frequently or commenting on online blogs and forums.  I have found that after commenting on someone else’s blog of forum page, I have a tendency to keep checking it to see if someone responded to my post.  This is an addictive behavior.

Despite using this blog to warn readers about hi-tech addictions, I myself have shown some signs of hi-tech addiction.  It’s easy for people to think that spending lots of time on the Internet is just the way it is these days.   However, many of us, myself included, need to put forth more effort to find balance in our lives.
