With a recession going on, many people are trying to find ways to improve their personal budgets. Canceling a gym membership is one way to improve your finances.
Getting Sick from the Gym
Jacki Donaldson of the That’s Fit blog provides another reason to avoid gyms: they can make you sick. She writes:
MRSA, a bacteria that causes staph infection and is resistant to many antibiotics, can be transmitted if you wipe off your machine and then later wipe the sweat off your face with the same towel. Think I’m crazy? Hans Schlecht, MD and assistant professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine, says it’s true. I’m inclined to believe him. And you?
Fitness at Home
Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine recently published a short article describing low tech methods to get in shape at home. My favorite suggestion was the Farmer’s Walk:
Farmer’s Walk: Pick up a large rock and hold it with your arms stretched in front of your chest. Walk ten yards and drop it. Pick it up again and repeat the process.
