Non-motorized Racing Report

There were a couple of non-motorized (horse and foot) races of interest this weekend.

Preakness

I did not see the race live, but watched the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes on Youtube.  In another year without a Triple Crown winner, the filly Rachel Alexandra held off a late charge by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.  Rachel Alexander, ridden by Calvin Borel won the race in 1 minute, 55 seconds galloping at an average speed of 37 mph.

It looked to me that Mine That Bird could have won if the 1 3/16th mile course been just 20 yards longer.  Interestingly, Calvin Borel was the jockey on both winning horses.

MMT 100

Ultrarunner Karl Meltzer won the mountainous Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 mile footrace in a time of 18 hours, 29 minutes, and 57 seconds at an average speed of 5.4 mph. In the Virginia mountains, there was pouring down rain on Saturday evening.  I was quite happy not be participating in the extreme running event.  Considering the weather, I was impressed that 58% of starters completed the race.
