Main Street Shopping

Main Street sign

We went to a wedding at Fells Point (Baltimore, MD) recently.  The bride and groom were planning to go sailing (a nice low-tech activity) for their honeymoon.

At the reception, my friend F_N brought up a good point about how Main Street shopping has decreased in many cities and towns.  At the same time, new shopping malls are popping up that are trying to mimic the Main Street look.  It’s an interesting situation.  It would be nice if many original Main Street shopping districts can prosper.

My understanding is that main street shopping was in decline long before the Internet. For the past 30 years, large discount retail chains have taken market share from the smaller specialty shops in downtowns. On reason, of course, is that these large chains have access to newest technologies, making them more competitive.

Thanks for the comment, Kevin. I agree that the decline of Main Street shopping may have preceded the Internet. It seems that small shops can (and should) have an Internet presence… maybe not as fancy as the large chains, but something that is adequate.

Interestingly, some malls are now in decline while some downtown communities appear to be coming back.
