As someone who lives on a gravel road, I thought this story by Mike Nystrom for Freep.com was interesting:
The problem is only getting worse. Based on current funding levels, almost half of Michigan’s roads will be in poor condition within 10 years. Already, 25 counties have been forced to pulverize their failing pavement back to gravel with no plans to repave them.
In Virginia, I remember some discussion about reverting U.S. 29 and Rte 234 to gravel through Manassas battlefield. However, I have not heard anything recently regarding those plans.
