Digital Music

Dan Frommer of the Business Insider wants to know why people are still buying CDs:

It’s easy to forget that old tech dies hard.

The latest example: Still 65% of all music sold in the U.S. this year is via compact disc, while digital downloads are just 35%, research firm NPD Group announced today. That’s down from 80% CDs and 20% digital in 2007. But for someone who sits in the digital bubble all day, it still feels jarringly high.

I listen to CDs because my car stereo does not have an aux-in port for an iPod. It just doesn’t seem worth it to me to mess with a system where you broadcast your iPod onto a radio station to be picked up by your car stereo.

However, I am buying fewer CDs these days. It is extremely rare for an artist to release an album where every track is great. Therefore, I preview the tracks online and buy only the ones I like before burning them onto a CD to listen to.
