Train Tuesdays
Railroading is one of my favorite topics so I’m pleased to announce a new feature here at the Low-Tech Times called Train Tuesdays. I will dedicate each Tuesday to writing a railroad related post.
East Broad Top Railroad History
The East Broad Top Railroad, located at Rockhill Furnace, PA, provides narrow-gauge steam excursions. The scenic line was built in 1873 and operating hauling coal until 1956. Fortunately, the line was reopened in 1960 and has been providing passenger excursions ever since.
Riding the East Broad Top
My wife and I rode the train last Sunday pulled by 2-8-2 #15 built in 1914 by Baldwin Locomotive Works. The train features covered and open cars. Riding in an open car, we got a little bit of soot on us but enjoyed the ride and views. I saw a lady wearing a shirt with the words, “Soot Happens.”
Each Columbus Day weekend, East Broad Top operates more trains for Fall Spectacular Weekend. The weekend is a good time to go since trains run more frequently and you can see additional equipment. This year, there were still quite a few green leaves so I think the next couple of weekends will provide good fall color as well.
East Broad Top Railroad Videos
I took a couple of videos during and after our train ride.
