Music Mondays
Cherryholmes is a popular family bluegrass band on Ricky Scaggs’s record label. They write a lot of their own material, which is admirable. However, I am more impressed with their performances of bluegrass classics vs newgrass style material. I really hope they will record some traditional songs on their next album, given the masterful performances I found on video. I predict that banjo player and singer Cia Cherryholmes will be a real star.
My Walkin’ Shoes
While searching for videos on Youtube, I found this outstanding performance of My Walkin’ Shoes featuring Paul Williams with Cherryholmes. Paul Williams is a famous mandolin player and tenor singer. He currently leads a gospel group called The Victory Trio after earlier work for the late Jimmy Martin. The former Sunny Mountain Boy joined Cherryholmes on stage to perform My Walkin’ Shoes. My Walking Shoes is one of my favorite songs and helped turn me on to bluegrass music when listening to the radio as a kid in my parents’ car many years ago.
Stormy Horizons
Another great Cherryholmes video features Luke McKnight, grandson of bluegrass star Jesse McReynolds, with Cherryholmes. Again, Cia Cherryholmes turns in a masterful performance with perfect harmony on the Jim and Jesse song Stormy Horizons.
Recommended Tracks
Cherryholmes has not yet officially recorded or released the above tunes. However, earlier versions of My Walkin Shoes and Stormy Horizons are available by Jimmy Martin (with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys respectively. Click to preview/order:

Recommended Album
In addition to the excellent My Walking Shoes track, the Will the Circle be Unbroken album has many other great tracks and is highly recommended for anyone interested in hearing good bluegrass. In addition to Jimmy Martin, the album also features Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, and other star performers.
One Trackback/Pingback
[...] The song is on the original Will the Circle Be Unbroken album. I previously recommended Bill Monroe’s Bean Blossom album as a great introduction to bluegrass. I also highly recommend The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Will the Circle Be Unbroken album as another great introduction to bluegrass. In addition to bluegrass, the album also features the great country singer Roy Acuff and the great folk guitarist and singer, Doc Watson. The album also features one of my very favorite bluegrass songs of all time, My Walkin’ Shoes. [...]
