The Fitness of Herschel Walker

It’s been awhile since I’ve written about fitness. I believe that gym memberships (and their hi-tech equipment) are not necessary for getting in shape.

Herschel Walker

One of my favorite examples of getting in shape without a gym is the story of Herschel Walker. Prior to his professional career, Walker got in shape mainly by doing push-ups and sit-ups, running, and jumping rope. The low-tech way of getting in shape is with old-fashioned hard work — not a bunch of expensive hi-tech equipment.

After his tremendously successful time at the University of Georgia where he won the Heisman Trophy, Herschel Walker spent some time in the failed USFL (United States Football League) before having a very successful NFL career. Following in the footsteps of the great Tony Dorsett, he was an awesome running back for the Dallas Cowboys (he also played for other teams before retiring).

Most recently, he signed a contract with Strikeforce to participate in mixed martial arts. Here’s an excerpt from the full story:

“I will go in there and test myself against any 20-year-old,” Walker said. “I know there will be naysayers and I’m fine with that. I want to prove to people who sit on a couch and don’t do anything but criticize other people that, if you’re a true athlete or martial artist, you’re not old until you can’t get up and walk around anymore. MMA fighters are said to be some of the best athletes in the world. My plan at the age of 47 is to show the world I am still one of the best athletes as well.”

Herschel Walker Books and DVDs

Herschel wrote a book called Basic Training which is unfortunately now out of print. However, Amazon.com is offering used books available from sellers. Additionally, a Herschel Walker Profile DVD is available. If interested, click the links below to preview/order:
