Snow Storms and Groceries
The Washington DC area has a reputation for making a run on grocery store items such as milk, bread, eggs, and toilet paper anytime snow is in the forecast. We actually already had most of what is pictured above, although we did buy a carton of eggs while we were out since we coudn’t remember how many eggs we had left.
How to Prepare
On a serious note, Governor Kaine declared a state of emergency for Virgina and urged citizens to be prepared to live for 72 hours on your own. It is always good to be prepared for the worst.

Pictured below:
- Railroad lantern
- Candle (kerosine lanterns are also good)
- Battery radio with handcrank backup
- Firewood (we have much more stored than is pictured)
Additionally, we filled up numerous water containers for drinking and have food for several meals. We also filled up a bathtub with water.
Why fill a bathtub with water?
We have an electric well pump that runs as needed to pump water into our pressurized holding tank. During a power outage, we could run out of water. With water stored in the tub, it is easy to bail water into the toilet tanks for flushing.
Do you have any other tips for preparing for a winter storm?
