Airport Security

Ever since the thwarted Christmas Day bomb attempt near Detroit, there has been a lot of news about using full body scanners at airport security.

Jane Merrick of the UK Independent questions this new technology:

The explosive device smuggled in the clothing of the Detroit bomb suspect would not have been detected by body-scanners set to be introduced in British airports, an expert on the technology warned last night.

The claim severely undermines Gordon Brown’s focus on hi-tech scanners for airline passengers as part of his review into airport security after the attempted attack on Flight 253 on Christmas Day.

I occasionally fly on airplanes and remember being at a couple of airports where they had passengers walk into a device similar to a phone booth. I believe the machine gave a blast of air and sniffed for explosives. I wonder if that would’ve detected the type of explosives used in the Christmas Day attack…?
