When I first bought Kenny Baker’s Spider Bit the Baby album a few years ago and listened to it, I was almost a bit underwhelmed. My initial reaction was that it was nice, but I didn’t think it was hard-driving enough.
Since that time, I’ve really grown to love the album. I’ve discovered that fiddle music doesn’t always have to have breakneck tempos to be great. Kenny Baker, who played for years with Bill Monroe, is a master fiddler with great taste. In fact, there’s not a bad track on Spider Bit the Baby. It is extremely rare for me to find a CD where I like every song, but Spider Bit the Baby succeeds in that way.
Lively, yet relaxing at the same time, Spider Bit the Baby is a great fiddle album. Despite the scary title, the album’s beautiful fiddling can help soothe a crying baby, provide lovely background music during dinner, or relieve stress when driving through traffic. I highly recommend this album by Kenny Baker.
