Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia is a wonderful paradise for steam enthusiasts. I’d recommend visiting any time they are open, but they also have a railfan weekend each year featuring additional equipment and trains. This year the event took place in May.
Here’s a nice video posted by csk1022. The video resolution is low (should load fast) and the audio is great. There’s nothing that sounds better than a steam whistle echoing in the mountains.
I haven’t been to Cass in several years, but would very much like to go again. I’ll try to find and scan my old photos in an upcoming post.
