I’m a big proponent of canceling cable and watching free over-the-air tv. The only real hardship involved is giving up movie channels. When I was younger, there used to be a bunch of good old movies on tv. Whereas nowadays, some of my local affiliates appear to be showing more infomercials.
There still are good movies on Free TV thanks to Ion TV. You can enter your zip code on their home page to find out if you pick up the station over-the-air in your area. Just this weekend, I watched Field of Dreams and The Fugitive (two good movies) on Ion Television.
- Field of Dreams
Field of Dreams is a good supernatural baseball story. I never played organized baseball growing up, but I appreciate baseball as part of what is great about the U.S.A. I recently asked someone if he was following Stephen Strasburg’s major league debut and he replied that he gave up on baseball after the strike. I haven’t given up on baseball and would recommend this movie to any baseball fan.
- The Fugitive
The Fugitive is one of my favorite movies. Starring Harrison Ford, the movie brings 24-like action and suspense. Another interesting tidbit from the movie I just noticed, was that Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester on Glee) has a part in it. 24 and Glee are two of my favorite TV programs, which are broadcast free over-the-air.
Preview / Purchase:
Even if you cannot movies you want to see on free tv, you can use the money saved by canceling cable to order movies from Netflix or Redbox. You can even buy a good number of DVDs and still come out way ahead.
Switch to Free TV
If you have an old tv, you’ll need a converter box and possibly a new antenna. If you have a newer flatscreen set, you’ll just need an antenna:
