More Movies on Free TV

I wanted to follow up on my original post covering good movies on free tv. Watching free tv with an antenna is a great alternative to paying for cable subscriptions. I recently watched some more decent movies on free, over-the-air tv.

Commercials

In general, I do not mind commercials shown during movies on television. Commercials provide a good time for a snack break or bathroom break. However, when you have a movie that is long to begin with such as The Godfather which has recently been broadcast on Ion television, then it becomes even longer. Therefore, I’d rather rent or buy The Godfather DVD Collection (The Godfather/ The Godfather – Part II/ The Godfather – Part III) than watch the movies on free TV.

Shorter films work better when shown with commercials. Here are brief reviews of three movies I recently watched on free tv.

Wildcats

There’s something fun about 80′s movies like Wildcats starring Goldie Hawn. It seems like modern comedies aren’t often as funny as this story about a female football coach leading an inner-city high school football team.

Shadrach

Shadrach was a interesting story about a 99-year old former slave who walked 600 miles from Alabama to Virginia to be buried on the farm he grew up on. The movie isn’t about the walk; it is mostly about how the farm family reacts to the situation. The family is challenged when the sheriff informs the family that it is illegal to bury someone on private property.

Murder on the Orient Express

If you pick up PBS in your area, they show Masterpiece Theater presentations in the evenings that are commercial-free. I watched Agatha Christie’s Poirot: Murder on the Orient Express (2010) which was a new and interesting version of the Agatha Christie mystery. There were a couple of neat steam train scenes as the story takes place in 1938.
