Can bluegrass music be cool? Chatham County Line is one of my favorite groups and they found a winning formula for making bluegrass cool. While I generally prefer their upbeat songs to some of their artsier stuff, they are great musicians and singers. I’ve seen them live a few times and they always put on a great show.
Wildwood
Chatham County Line has a new album out called Wildwood – Chatham County Line. I’ve previewed all the songs and bought a few of them, my favorite being Ringing in my Ears, which uses a snare drum to deliver a song with plenty of drive. Other good tracks include Wildwood, Crop Comes In, and Out of the Running.
Route 23
Route 23 – Chatham County Line is an excellent album, featuring several fine songs including Nowhere to Sleep, Engine No. 709, Make Some Pay, Born to Be With You, and the title track. Route 23, the song, tells a moving story of a gas station along a two-lane road that gets bypassed by a new four-lane highway.
Speed of the Whippoorwill
Speed Of The Whippoorwill – Chatham County Line is another fine album featuring some more great tunes, including Company Blues, Rock Pile, and one of my favorites, Lonesome In Caroline.
IV
From Chatham County Line’s IV – Chatham County Line album, I recommend Whipping Boy, Let It Rock, and The Carolinian (good train song).
