Railroad Anniversaries

Train Tuesdays [published on Wednesday this week]

How old is Norfolk Southern?

In 2005, Norfolk Southern Railway celebrated their 175th anniversary. This year they are celebrating their 30th anniversary. The apparent contradiction is explained because the 175th anniversary was a celebration of their oldest predecessor railroad, the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company.

This year’s 30th anniversary celebrates the formation of the modern Norfolk Southern 30 years ago when Southern Railway merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway to become Norfolk Southern.

Norfolk Southern Anniversary Events

As mentioned last week, Norfolk Southern has a series of employee family appreciation steam excursions planned this summer as well as some public steam excursions behind Southern Railway steam locomotive number 630.

Additionally, they are gathering a fleet of locomotives painted in predecessor railroad heritage paint schemes at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC for a July 3rd and 4th Family Portrait:

All 20 locomotives painted in the color schemes of predecessor railroads will be on display July 3 and 4.

“This is the first and probably only chance we’ll have to get all these locomotives together in one place at one time,” said Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman. “We’re proud of the role railroads play in keeping the country’s economy strong, and July 4 is an opportune time to showcase that heritage of service and safety.”

Union Pacific’s 150th Anniversary

Union Pacific is also celebrating a very significant milestone this year and has a special website, http://www.up150.com/ set up detailing the history and events set up this year to mark the 150th anniversary of their company. Many events are featuring their outstanding steam locomotive number 844.
