Deep Six by Clive Cussler: Highly Recommended Reading

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

I’ve seen Clive Cussler’s novels described as intellectual junk food, but I have to admit that I’m a big fan of Clive Cussler’s work. I’ve read several of his novels and so far Deep Six is my favorite in the Dirk Pitt series. I would go so far to say that Deep Six it is my personal favorite novel of all time.

In Deep Six, an unknown enemy launches a hi-tech plot to take over the executive branch of the U.S. government. When defeat appears inevitable, Dirk Pitt finds 19th century resources to deploy in a last ditch effort to stop the hi-tech enemy. The Low-Tech Times highly, highly, highly recommends this book!

Print Is Not Dead

Reader’s Digest

Many people these days are saying that print is dead.  While it’s true that many newspapers have seen declining subscriptions, print is definitely not dead. Despite competition from online publishers, print media is truly alive.

According to Wikipedia:

Reader’s Digest is still the best-selling consumer magazine in the United States, with a circulation of over 10 million copies in the United States, and a readership of 38 million as measured by Mediamark Research (MRI)… …Global editions of Reader’s Digest reach an additional 40 million people in more than 70 countries, with 50 editions in 21 languages. It is also published in brail, digital, audio, and a version in large-type called Reader’s Digest Large Print.

I have never met anyone who brings their computer with them into the bathroom. On the other hand, Reader’s Digest is the perfect bathroom read, featuring jokes, a monthly vocabulary quiz, and plenty of short, interesting stories. The Low Tech Times predicts that print will never die.

Christmas Presents Review

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

I wanted to let you know about a couple of presents I received this year for Christmas. Both are highly recommended by the Low-Tech Times.

First, I received a great book from my father-in-law. It is entitled Country Wisdom and Know-How and it is packed with tons of useful information, including how to make home remedies, how to grow a vineyard, how to field dress game, how to cook, and much, much more.

Secondly, some close friends gave us a hand-crank radio. Hand-crank radios are very good to have around during power outages. In addition to regular AM/FM radio, the radio also picks up television stations and NOAA weather channels. It plays for quite awhile on the rechargeable battery and you can recharge the battery by cranking if necessary during extended power outages.
